Origanum syriacum - Herbaceous perennial herb. Grows in most well drained soil types. Full sun. 50 cms height, 1 metre width. Hairy grey green, aromatic leaves. Grows well in pots. One of the primary ingredients in Za’tar spice mix. Small white flowers in the spring and summer. A culinary herb, used fresh or dried. Za’tars flavour is like a mix of thyme, marjoram and oregano. Used a lot in middle eastern cooking. Also a medicinal plant. A tea is made from the leaves. Grows well in pots also. Flowers are a good nectar sources for pollinating insects.
