Verbena officinalis - Hardy herbaceous perennial. 60 cms height, 50 cms width. Full sun to part shade. Lovely sprays of small lilac flowers throughout spring, summer and autumn. Flowers very attractive to bees and butterflies. Medicinal plant for humans and animals. Used by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. Also one of the main herbs of the ancient druids. Leaves may be used to make a tea or parboiled and eaten as a vegetable, but is quite bitter tasting. The flowers can be made into a wine. In Turkey the flowers are used to flavour salt. Well drained moist soil. Frost hardy. A plant that will survive some neglect.
