Hierochloe odorata - Hardy aromatic perennial herb. Full sun to part shade. Repels mosquitoes. Used in traditional basket making. Vanilla grass is used in Russia to flavour tea and vodka. A medicinal herb. Highly valued by Native Americans as one of their “four sacred medicines”. Prefers a rich moist to wet soil. Will also grow in bog gardens. Vanilla Grass has fragrant yellow flowers in the summer. Frost hardy. The seed is edible, when cooked. The dried leaves can be used as an incense. and are good in drawers for their fragrant and insect repelling qualities. This plant grows well in very cold areas, but is doing equally well here coping with extreme heat.
