Allium cepa var. aggregatum - The I’itoi Onion originally came from Spain, and was taken to America in the 1700’s, where it became a staple for some native American tribes. This onion is a fantastic perennial multiplier onion. All of my research told me it was productive, but I was still surprised at how quickly it multiplied. It is quite rare now, as most old perennial vegetables are. It did die back in the high heat of summer, I harvested some bulbs to re-plant and I also left some in the ground, all grew back equally well. I’itoi copes really well with heat, and some of it’s growing areas in America include sub tropical summer areas. They also cope well with the cold. These are sold as what is growing in the pot, usually 1-3 plants, depending on bulb size.
