Allium chinense - Hardy, evergreen perennial bulb. Full sun. Clump forming growth habit. A very productive plant, multiplying readily. Well drained moist but not waterlogged soil. An excellent culinary plant. Both the bulbs and leaves can be eaten raw or cooked. Bulbs also make a good pickling onion. Chinese onions are also used medicinally . Attractive purple flower heads in the autumn. The flowers are also edible and can be used as a garnish. Crops are better with regular watering throughout the growing season. Can die back in the height of summer, but will regrow as weather cools.
