Galium vera - Herbaceous perennial ground cover. 20-40 cms height, 70- 150 cms width. Full sun to part shade, but prefers part shade. Dense clusters of yellow honey scented flowers. The whole plant has the scent of freshly mown hay. Enjoys a rich, fertile, well manured soil that is well drained. Frost hardy. Can be grown in coastal gardens. Grows among and under other plants well without choking them. I have them growing under rose bushes and they look great. A yellow dye can be made from the flowering stems, this dye can be used to colour food. A red dye can be made from the roots. Used to curdle milk in cheese making, and colour the cheese. The roasted seed is used as a coffee substitute.
