Sambucus nigra - Hardy herbaceous perennial. 1-2 metres height, 1-1.5 metres width. Full sun to part shade. Multi stemmed shrub with attractive green and white variegated foliage and lovely arching branches. Scented white flowers in clusters throughout the growing season. Flowers followed by black berries, which shouldn’t be eaten raw, but can be used to make jams and wines. The berries contain high amounts of phosphorus, potassium and vitamin C. Birds also enjoy eating the berries, The flowers are attractive to bees and butterflies. A fast growing shrub, which we like to use in our animals pens for quick growing summer shade, with foliage that is good for them if they eat it. Grows in most soil moist soil types.
