Zea diploperennis - An extremely rare wild perennial relative of maize/corn. It is highly endangered in the wild. Only growing naturally in a small area. Produces edible seedd, but only in small ears. Harvested in the wild for use as food. Used primarily now to cross breed with annual corn crops, to impart its disease resistance, perennialism, flood tolerance and other strong characteristics. Clump forming growth habit, 100-250 cms height. Grows quickly, especially in hot weather. Said to be not frost hardy, but is growing really well here in my unheated greenhouse. I have also left a few plants growing outside, and although not looking great are still growing through our very cold winter now. We have had many nights in a row below zero. A really rare plant that even if you do not use as an edible , still looks great in the garden and really needs to be grwmn and saved from extinction.
