Dianthus caryophyllus - The lovely perennial carnation of old. The flower petals are edible, making attractive additions to salads and can also be candied. The petals can also be used to make a syrup and a medicinal tonic. Frost hardy and will grow in most well drained garden soils. An excellent plant for the cottage garden also.
