Vitex agnus castus - Deciduous perennial tree.2-5 metres height. Full sun to part shade. Fragrant leaves. Pretty blue flowers produced in the summer, which are attractive to butterflies. Flowers are followed by small black fruits. The fruits were once used as a pepper substitute. Frost hardy. Requires a well drained soil. Don’t over water when the plant is dormant, as this will cause the roots to rot. A medicinal herb. They flowers are used to make perfume. A yellow dye can be made from the leaves, seeds and roots. This plant has a long history of use, mostly to promote chastity.
