Saponaria officinalis - A hardy perennial herb. Pretty scentetd pink flowers in profussion. As the name suggests it is used to make an effective but very gentle soap. The soap can be used to clean delicate fabrics. It has a traditional use as a sop for dry skin also. A good ground cover plant, but it can take over so give it some space or grow in a pot. Succeeds in most well drained soils. Do not grow next to a pond that has amphibians or fish in as if soapwort grows into the water it can poison them.
