Smyrnium olusatrum - Biennial vegetable and herb.150 cms height. An edible herb, cultivated since ancient times. The ancient Romans carried Alexanders with them on campaign. It was also commonly grown in Medieval monastery gardens in England. Alexanders has the flavour of parsley and celery together, and the aroma of celery. The leaves, stems and seeds are eaten. The root is also edible, it can be cooked and eaten , and also has medicinal value. The flower heads can also be pickled. The whole plant is used medicinally. Will grow in coastal gardens. Horses love to eat Alexanders. With attractive dark green, shiny leaves, Alexanders also looks good in the garden. Umbels of yellow green flowers produced in spring and summer. Frost hardy plant. Alexanders grows in most moist, well drained soils.
